Crayfish antennae

Crayfish antennae(Procambarus clarkii)

download

In the image above you can observe the antennae of a crayfish from the Procambarus clarkii species. The sample was taken from the shed exoskeleton of the crayfish. The crayfish has a pair of long antennae and two branched pairs of small ones. These frontal joints of the crayfish represent organs of touch (due to them the crayfish feels the water vibrations and thus it can identify its prey), smell and taste. The antennae also maintain the crayfish equilibrium when it moves forwards. The crayfish have the ability to regenerate their antennae, although this process requires a long period of time.
