The human red blood cells (haematids, erythrocytes) lack a cell nucleus and represent the most common type of blood cells (typically there are about 4 to 5 million erythrocytes per cubic millimeter of blood). The haematids are round or oval in shape and have a dimension of around 7 microns and a pink color. The red blood cells may be considered tiny sacs of hemoglobin, their main constituent. Their role is to carry the oxygen from the lungs to the tissues and the carbon dioxide all the way around, from tissues to lungs, from where it is exhaled.
