Vorticella

download

In this video you can observe a unicellular ciliate organism belonging to the Kingdom Protista, which has detached itself from the substrate, unlike the othere specimens, moving through the liquid in search of food. This behaviour represents an exception and can be seen at young specimens, but also at adult ones if the contractile stalk with which they fix themselves onto the substrate is being cut off or if they are forced to look for new sources of food. The cilia from the head of the Vorticella make a current of water (vortex) in order to catch the food around (bacteria and other protozoa).
